I have decided not to go for one of the jobs I was filling out forms for, but will definitely have a punt at the other.

Working Kitten, glad to see you not lurking! And I have always agreed that work to live is the right way. Sometimes it just doesn't work like that though.

Mephitis, they are completely dismissive. Rubbish.

Beach Bum, that is so, absolutely true. I can't even recall the last time I went out at a weekend.

Misssy, in fairness, I love teaching, and feel that I'm good at it. It's just that the department's a complete mess, and I've been thrown into a shitty situation. My current line manager won't be under the new structure, so is completely disinterested - she actually said to raise it with my new manager after the holidays. My closest friend at work is actually your replacement, and believe me, your department is definitely a far nicer place than mine!

Lindsay, it's absolutely right - the more you do, the more they expect. Maybe I should just refuse to do anything above what I'm contracted for - but I just can't.

Alison, I really tried to get out of the jury service but they were having none of it. I will bring a good book!

JustMe, the Unions at my workplace are a quiet bunch - I've not even been approached to join yet! And I'll get to that tag at some point.

CB, you make me laugh - basically they pretty much did tell me to suck it up!Cathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11858850210791504996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10574028.post-20464377032198242762008-06-24T13:19:00.000+03:002008-06-24T13:19:00.000+03:00Cat, to answer both questions: Yes, and yes. You'r...Cat, to answer both questions: Yes, and yes. You're under way too much pressure, and your work appears to be unsympathetic - stopping short of saying 'suck it up, beyatch!'

You might be letting them down if you leave, but they're letting you down now, by not supporting you when you need it the most. They usually DONT!
And you have been TAGGED! I dont understand the rules entirely, but you apparently have to pop over to my blog and find them Answer the questions or not....I'm not fussed!
And best of luck.....its hard moving a job that you love and are good at just because people wont fix things that they could....but at the end of the day.....you don't need the strass, and some other employer may actually appreciate how wonderful you are!justmehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16768035027235782814noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10574028.post-18058256360435203432008-06-23T19:53:00.000+03:002008-06-23T19:53:00.000+03:00Why not take the summer holidays you have so right...Why not take the summer holidays you have so rightfully earned to reflect on the past six months. Spend summer doing things you want to do, not planning for the job. It’s your summer enjoy it! You can of course browse over other opportunities as and when they pass you and just maybe you will find something that you want to do and that would be worth applying for.

As for the Jury Service, unlucky for you not to get out of it! Have fun!Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05568460112210030814noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10574028.post-57431173180414717472008-06-23T19:29:00.000+03:002008-06-23T19:29:00.000+03:00I totally agree with what others have already writ...I totally agree with what others have already written thus far...

...particularly the part about you feeling bad about letting them down.

You have had a word with them to see if there is any way around the current situation, yet they seem unwilling to come up with a suitable solution!

You work hard enough as it is. Without giving up the majority of your free time as well. After all, I doubt you'll get much thanks for it in the long-run. The MORE you do, the MORE they expect of you...

Whatever you decide, Good luck with it Cat ;-)

xlindsayslifehttp://lindsayslife.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10574028.post-14008893509975138482008-06-23T18:05:00.000+03:002008-06-23T18:05:00.000+03:00Frankly I have been shocked at the way your depart...Frankly I have been shocked at the way your department has been run since you started. As someone who recommended this job to you, I feel horrible that it has turned out this way. All I can say is that I must have been very lucky to work in the department I did.

When you get your new job, don't hold back in the exit interview. The post you wrote recently where you said you told them in your review how unbelieveably hard your workload was getting and they told you basically to keep your head down and not rock the boat, well that spoke volumes about your employers attitude to your general wellbeing.

I've always firmly believed that you should work to live, not live to work, and right now you seem to be falling into the latter category. You have to remember that whatever friendships you have at work, the people you are ultimately worrying about letting down here are not your friends, who do matter, they are your employers. Maybe its time to show yourself some loyalty and not primarily focus on not letting down others anymore. You only get one go at life, all you have to ask yourself is this really how you want to spend it?

Right, now I've said my bit I'll go back to happily lurking! xWorking Kittennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10574028.post-90584069865576374382008-06-23T09:25:00.000+03:002008-06-23T09:25:00.000+03:00Hi Cat. You've given it your best shot, love the job but not the work load and its effects on your social life. Its not going to change in March or the foreseeable future and your feelings/resentment about it will only build up. You are responsible for your own emotional health, not those whose lives you think you may make more difficult by leaving. Who knows, it may prompt HR to make changes to the recruitment process which will benefit others in the future. I say, get posting those applications and good luck. xxOut of a Bottlenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10574028.post-433595140143014362008-06-23T07:51:00.000+03:002008-06-23T07:51:00.000+03:00Hi, I've been reading along for ages, and now I'm ...Hi, I've been reading along for ages, and now I'm popping up to say "Don't doubt yourself".
