Everybody's Fool

Approximately every 29 days, I have my period. And because I am useless with numbers, there are a variety of helpful signals that it's on its way. My skin breaks out, my stomach bloats, my boobs hurt, and I alternate between weeping at adverts and feeling like I could murder someone.

This has been the way for a massive 23 years, with the exception of a few brief flirtations with running packs of the pill together. Something I do not recommend. The fallout is brutal.

So. In the light of this, why is it that every single month, without fail, I find myself rootling around in the dark, in the middle of the night, hunting through handbags in the hope of coming across a stray tampon?

Why, why, why can't I get my act together and be even a tiny bit organised?

Mooncup. Available from Boots. Makes the whole business far more tolerable.

I won't elaborate, you'll be glad to hear!

Cat, I'm back, and I have great advice. If you have a warehouse shopping club in Scotland, like we have here (Costco, Sam's Club, etc.) just go in and buy a lifetime supply. Problem solved. Isn't it nice to have me around?

P.S. all kidding aside, you should see the size of the box my wife buys for her and my daughter. I figure it will last both until menopause.

There is one simple explanation; there are NEVER deals or 3 for 2 offers on tampons. So you NEVER stock up, you only buy when needed. It's the one item we need to buy, yet there's never any incentive to buy in bulk and reward us for our good (albeit grudging) custom.

Why IS this? Is it a legal thing, like with baby milk powder? I don't get it.

You see I shouldn’t complain because with the PCOS they where non existent for years… and what did I do I MOANED, telling myself I didn’t feel normal! Then low and behold I dropped 40lbs and bingo they returned last December and are blessing my life every 28 days without fail! I thought weight loss was supposed to be a good thing, now I am not to sure!

23 years is a long time, I never looked at it like that… god men have it easy! Lol

SpiralSkies, I've read a lot about those but have never actually thought about trying one. I bet it doesn't stop the hideous pain though!

Cody Bones, we have Costco here - my mum has a garage filled with about a million toilet rolls and bottles of water from there! I don't have a garage - could I store the tampons in the communal hall, I wonder?

Misssy, I think all forms of sanitary protection should be free - it makes me so cross to have no choice but to shell out for it every month.

Alison, yup, next time I am coming back as a bloke... It doesn't bear thinking about how long a woman spends actually bleeding in a lifetime!

Linda, I am way up north - in Scotland.

And we pay VAT on them (5%) what with them being luxuries and all.

OK, longtime lurker... here to second Spiralskies on the mooncup (I discovered it two months ago and love it, even tho I'm not AT ALL the hippy type, and am now recommending it whenever I can.) Bizarrely, I find it makes pains a little better... no clue why.

And I must recommend www.mon.thly.info - you enter your dates, it starts to predict your next period, and can email you a couple of days before. And you can change the message so you get a block caps email saying "GO TO BOOTS", if that's what it takes... Or even just "put mooncup in handbag"...

RunnerBean, thanks for reminding me of that - grrr again.

Nearly Blonde, hello, thanks for de-lurking! And thanks for the tips. I'm going to investigate the Mooncup tomorrow, in Boots...

this is me... 24 day cycle, and even mark it on my desk calendar when i´m due. yet there is never a torpedo at the ready! i keep telling myself that i´ll buy in bulk (quantity, not size) and spend a day every 6 months squirreling them away in the office, car, purse, backpack, restroom at the office, etc. But i never do...

Daisy, I must confess that I do have a desk drawer stash in the office. But that's no use to my at three in the morning, damnit!
